The latest Quinnipiac Poll shows that Democrat Ned Lamont is ahead by 3 percentage points over former Stamford Mayor Dannel Malloy, but the race is too close to call because the margin of error is plus or minus 4.6 percentage points......

.... Both Republicans and Democrats also say that Lamont suffered a setback when he initially refused to debate Malloy in the final weeks of the race in a one-on-one, televised debate .....

....The poll of likely Democratic voters shows Lamont ahead by 45 percent to 42 percent, which is closer than the 45 to 40 lead that he had last week. Overall, 30 percent of those polled said they could still change their minds before Tuesday's vote, and 12 percent said they were still undecided.

"The poll reflects what we're seeing and hearing every day on the campaign trail: Dan's got the momentum,'' said Dan Kelly, Malloy's campaign manager.....

....As multi-millionaires from Greenwich, both Lamont and Foley have enough money to air commercials in the highly expensive New York City television market. That is part of their strategy to reach voters in lower Fairfield County as the New York stations are beamed from Greenwich to Bridgeport and beyond. Many candidates are unable to afford New York television, and some believe it is a waste of money as the commercials are often seen by viewers in places like Brooklyn and Long Island who cannot vote in Connecticut. But Lamont, Foley, and U.S. Senate candidate Linda McMahon are all broadcasting commercials on the New York stations.

"It's really the only way to reach a broad audience in Fairfield County because 35 percent of the Republicans are in Fairfield County,'' Foley said in an interview. "We think it's a good investment for the general election.''

Foley said Saturday that he believed that Lamont has an advantage over Malloy because of the New York City commercials, but he agreed that the race is getting much tighter.

"It could be a jump ball, and he's up in New York and Malloy isn't, so it's his to lose,'' Foley said

Investigators are searching for two suspects who shot a city man in the leg Friday night during a robbery attempt at the corner of Lexington Avenue and Olean Street, police said.

Police said they received numerous 911 calls about the shooting at shortly after 8:30 p.m. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found the victim sitting on the ground near El Coqui Grocery Store and Deli, 39 Lexington Ave., and bleeding from a gunshot wound in his upper right leg, according to police. The victim said he was walking home from a Mexican Restaurant on Ely Avenue when two black males approached him near the grocery store and demanded money, police said.

The victim told the robbers that he did not have his wallet, and he started to run, police said. He only made it to the back of the grocery store because one of the robbers pulled out a black handgun and shot him in the leg, according to police. The robbers fled down Olean Street, and the victim managed to run a short distance before collapsing in front of the grocery store, police said.

"It went very well, better than expected," said Judkins, whose son is in the marching band. Karen Amsler, chairwoman of Marching Bears, Inc., said the flea market was a success and it will become a yearly event. She said that although the event was "thrown together in three weeks," there was a tremendous outpouring of support from the community. Norwalk High School color guard member Rachel Tangard said she was surprised by the large amount of people who combed the aisles of the flea market and the quality of the items that were being sold by vendors at the market.

"I've seen so many cars come in here," she said. "I'm working here and I still brought some stuff." Tangard and her fellow color guard member Heidy Contreras praised the dedication of the parents who work to raise money for the color guard and marching band. Marching Bears, Inc., a group of parents that organizes various fundraisers for the band, generates enough money each year to fund trips for the award-winning band and provide scholarships for band members.

A 23-year-old city man accused of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl was arraigned Friday at Norwalk Superior Court. Jerrell Richards, of 4 Merritt St., was arrested Thursday morning and charged with two counts of sexual assault and two counts of risk of injury to a minor.

Judge Bruce Hudock raised Richards' bond on Friday from $75,000 to $250,000, noting that Richards has multiple prior arrests and criminal convictions as well as probation violations.

Richards will appear in court on Aug. 20. Richards was arrested after officers were called to the Monterey Village housing complex for a reported sexual assault at 6:17 a.m. on Thursday. The victim told police that she heard a knock on her window. She opened her blinds and saw Richards, police said.

He asked if he could use the bathroom in her apartment, according to police. The victim told police that Richards was known to her family, and she allowed him to use the bathroom in the home, police said. After Richards exited the bathroom, the victim escorted him downstairs to the entrance of the building, according to police. Richards began to flirt with her, but the victim denied his advances, police said.

The victim said in her statement that Richards became angry and pulled out a knife, telling her that he was "going to get what he wants from her and going to get it now," police said. He pushed her down a set of stairs, placed his hand over her mouth and forced himself on her, according to the victim's statement to police.

No Clear Timeline for Wall Street Place Phase One (thehour)

With working drawings for Phase One of Wall Street Place now in the hands of the Norwalk Redevelopment Agency, the chairman of the Common Council's Planning Committee wants a clear timeline to groundbreaking on the project.

"Can we get just a simple Excel spreadsheet ... three months, six months, nine months, and then what date he's supposed to start, by this theory, construction?" asked Chairman Douglas E. Hempstead at City Hall on Thursday night.

The day before, POKO Partners LLC, the city's selected redeveloper for the Isaacs Street portion of the Wall Street neighborhood, delivered to the Redevelopment Agency working drawings for Phase One of Wall Street Place. The first phase calls for 101 apartments, 236 parking spaces, as well as retail space. Under the land disposition agreement between the city, agency and POKO Partners, the developer must meet certain timelines in advancing the project from approvals to construction.

"Ultimately, once the approval of these (working drawings) are in place, he's got 90 days to commence construction," said Timothy T. Sheehan, Redevelopment Agency executive director. Asked Hempstead: "So in a perfect world, there may be a couple weeks back and forth, he gets his financing. Spring, in theory, this would be under construction?"

On the eve of next Tuesday's primary elections, the Tea Party movement is returning to Norwalk to drum its message of fiscal conservatism and smaller government and tip voters toward candidates who share those views. The rally is set for Saturday at 1 p.m. outside Norwalk City Hall, 125 East Ave.

"There were a couple hundred people last time and we expect more this time," said Robert Willis, coordinator for the Fairfield County Tea Party, referring to a rally in May at City Hall. "We want to call attention to the (Republican) primary. We're going to have some speakers and candidates." Merkle said Martha A. Dean, the endorsed Republican candidate for the office of state attorney general, will be at the rally, as well as Rob Merkle, the Norwalk Republican hoping to win next Tuesday's Republican primary election for the 4th Congressional District and defeat Democratic incumbent Jim Himes in the November general election.

"The Tea Party supporters and groups are trying to get the candidate we believe can beat Jim Himes," Willis said. "We're just trying to educate the public on candidates, on who we support, and are urging everyone to vote in the primary on Aug. 10."

Lt. Gov. Michael Fedele has the combination of government and business experience that, given the chance to serve in the No. 1 seat, would be good for the state of Connecticut.

The Connecticut Post endorses his candidacy in the Aug. 10 Republican three-way primary.

The 55-yearold Fedele brings 10 years of legislative experience, serving in the state House of Representatives from 1992 to 2002, and three years in his current position.

But Fedele is also a self-made businessman and understands that job creation is the top challenge to the state.

Fedele understands in no uncertain terms that improving the atmosphere in Connecticut for small business is essential to turning around the state's economy.

His stand against any new taxes speaks to his understanding of the situation.

We compliment him for his position.

Given his experience, Fedele is confident solutions to the state's problems of spending and borrowing can be resolved through good management, and not through new taxes.Though Fedele has been part of the Rell administration ... well, that in some respects sums it up.

It was indeed the Rell administration, and if anyone can name a Connecticut lieutenant governor who shaped policy from that office, we'd be curious to know who it was.

Fedele rightly says he can be held accountable only for those areas in which he had authority.

And Tom Foley brings a business background as well. But he also brings some unpleasant baggage to the race.

But Fedele earns our endorsement. We believe he's the best of the three choices to lead the state.

Lembo And Jarjura Battle In The Democratic State Comptroller Primary

A week from Tuesday, Aug. 10, registered Democrats will go to the polls to narrow the field in a number of contested races, but even after that, there are so many contenders in so many races that it's really hard to keep track.

People shouldn't complain about their elected representatives if they don't at least cast an educated ballot first.

Do a little homework first. Visit the candidates' websites and study their positions on issues that you care about.

The battle to be comptroller, is very important given the state's nearly $3 billion deficit.

Many wonder why this seat is contested in such hard times. One would think that it would be more fun to be the money person when the state is flush rather than broke. But this hasn't deterred Democrats Kevin Lembo and Michael Jarjura from battling for the democratic nod.

The winner of that race will face Republican Jack Orchulli and Green candidate Colin Bennett.

Democrat Kevin Lembo, who served as assistant state comptroller to Nancy Wyman, is the party-endorsed candidate running against Michael Jarjura for the state comptroller seat.

Lembo is nationally recognized for his expertise in health care systems and consumer protection, according to his campaign website. He currently leads the Office of the Healthcare Advocate for the state. He lives in Guilford with his wife; they have three children.

Today the Harwinton Democratic Town Committee is hosting a meet and greet so voters can meet candidates. The event will be held at the Harwinton Senior Center, 209 Weingart Road, from 2 to 4 p.m.

Mr. Lembo has confirmed that he will attend.

Mike Jarjura is the mayor of Waterbury. He worked as a state representative in the 1990s and as an assistant attorney general. He has a B.S. in management from Post College and a J.D. from the University of Bridgeport School of Law.

This weekenday, with Waterbury Mayor Jarjura was on the ropes after Lembo came out with three body blows.

First, a YouTube video surfaced of the Democrat speaking at a Tea Party rally.

"We needed a spark, and you're the spark that is going to be the change. So don't give up. Don't get discouraged because this country is worth fighting for and you're fighting for it," Jarjura said at the rally in Waterbury last September.

Jarjura, a Democrat, defended his attendance at the ultra-conservative rally.

Jarjura claimed he was there at the request of Waterbury citizens and he wasn't there to advocate for any political group," he said. "Every one is trying to do a 'gotcha' in these campaigns and manipulate things to something you don't even represent."

Lembo isn't buying it.

"It's an odd choice for a Democratic mayor to be attending a Tea Party rally," he told the press.

The second blow to Jarjura's campaign was the Waterbury teachers union endorsing Lembo, following the lead one week ago of the local police union.

Jarjura's response: it's backlash from the tough contract negotiations between the city and the unions as a result of the tight economy.

Finally, Lembo launched a television advertisement attacking Jarjura for hiring former Gov. John Rowland, a Republican forced to resign by a corruption scandal.

"Jarjura hired Rowland to a $100,000 dollar a year job after he got out of prison -- calling him the best governor Connecticut has ever had," the 30-second advertisement says.

Jarjura backed the hiring of John Rowland, the disgraced former Republican governor, in an economic development job partly funded with city money.

Jarjura has responded with mailings touting his negative web site, called Lembo Lies, and filed a lawsuit attempting to block Lembo's ability to spend public financing money.

Jarjura's mailer to registered Democrats, accusing Lembo of being a secret conservative. The mailer directed Democrats to a web site created by Jarjura's campaign.

“Some of my opponents’ claims are just bizarre. But let me be clear – I have never ever lied to the people of Connecticut or distorted my record," Lembo said.

The Lembo campaign responded by saying that Jarjura is a cultural conservative who opposes abortion rights.

A Superior Court judge Tuesday rejected Michael Jarjura's effort to block Kevin Lembo from using public financing in their Democratic contest for state comptroller.

The terse order by Judge James T. Graham frees Lembo to begin spending the $375,000 awarded to him last week for his Aug. 10 primary with Jarjura, the mayor of Waterbury.

Jarjura, who also has received $375,000 in public financing.

This legal challenge is the second of two attempts by Jarjura to deny public financing to Lembo.

It is a tough job to try and keep track, but it is a job that needs to be done.

Speaking of the secretary of state, did you know that Gerry Garcia (yes, that's really his name) could get bumped in next week's primaries in his bid to be Connecticut's new secretary of the state?

The Democrat is vying for the seat against party endorsed candidate Denise Merrill in what will be a three-way race Nov. 2 pitting either Garcia or Merrill against Republican Jerry Farrell Jr. and Green Party contender S. Michael DeRosa.

It's an important job, overseeing the state's elections, so we'd all do ourselves a favor by brushing up on the candidates' qualifications and platforms so we can make informed decisions come November.

Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) Commissioner Jerry Farrell Jr, nominated at convention for Secretary of State, reiterated the calls for fiscal conservatism, even through the Secretary of State's office.

Farrell just qualified for public campaign financing.and submitted his paperwork to the State Elections Enforcement Commission in preparation of the November general election.

Farrell’s campaign raised over $75,000 from over 900 contributors who were limited to a maximum of $100 per person.

Once approved, Farrell will receive a grant of $750,000 to compete with a Democratic opponent who will receive the same grant.

Farrell and Democratic attorney general candidate George Jepsen are the only statewide candidates without a primary election to receive public funding.

NORWALK By STEVE KOBAK Hour Staff Writer Norwalk Police arrested a 25-year-old man Thursday afternoon for allegedly kicking his 3-year-old stepson in the face because the toddler accidentally unplugged an air conditioner. Rafael Villanueva, of 97 Lexington Ave., Apt. 3, was charged with third-degree assault and risk of injury to a minor. He was held on $20,000 bond and was arraigned in Norwalk Superior Court on Friday. An anonymous tipster called Norwalk Police at 1:30 p.m. Thursday to report that a boy at a Lexington Avenue apartment had been abused by his stepfather, police said. The tipster said the abuse occurred on Wednesday, police said. Patrol officers and officers from the Youth Bureau of the Norwalk Police Department responded to the Lexington Avenue apartment, according to police. When officers arrived, they observed a visibly injured 3-year-old boy inside of the apartment, police said. The boy had bruising to his eye and swelling to his face, police said. Investigators spoke with the boy's mother, who said that one of her other sons had told her about the incident, according to police. She said her 3-year-old son was playing near the air conditioning cord and when the boy accidentally shut off the air conditioner, Villanueva became enraged and kicked the boy in the face, police said.

NORWALK By STEVE KOBAK Hour Staff Writer Two Norwalk Police officers who investigated a former autism therapist accused of swindling tens of thousands of dollars from Norwalk schools were given an award from federal law enforcement authorities Wednesday morning. The U.S. Department of Education's Office of the Inspector General awarded plaques to Sgt. Art Weisgerber and Detective David Orr for their work on developing the criminal case against Stacy Lore, who is currently awaiting trial on fraud charges. "I can't tell you how proud I am of the hard work that our detectives do day in and day out," said Police Chief Harry Rilling. "It's nice to see them get recognition." State Sen. Bob Duff, D-25, and Mayor Richard A. Moccia joined many high-ranking members of the Norwalk Police Department to congratulate Orr and Weisgerber. "The damage that this person has done goes beyond financial loss," Moccia said. Band Lineup for 2010 Oyster Festival Announced (thehour)

Hour Staff Report NORWALK -- 10,000 Maniacs will headline the Saturday evening show of the annual Oyster Festival, which will take place Sept. 10 to 12, according to festival officials. Wang Chung, a London-based new wave group, will open for 10,000 Maniacs. On Sunday evening, Still Alive and Well opens on the main stage and Big Shot -- a Billy Joel national tribute band -- will be the finale. On Friday, Thunderhead and Short Bus will be featured, along with another regional band. Other Main Stage acts include Blue Bossa Gypsy on Saturday, plus Katherine Waugh singing Broadway show tunes and classic tenor Christopher Macchio on Sunday. Proposed Use of Old Smith Street Jailhouse by NHS Approved (thehour)

NORWALK By ROBERT KOCH Hour Staff Writer Fire Damage Repairs Pending City Historical commissioners on Wednesday night approved a proposal by the Norwalk Historical Society to use the old Smith Street jailhouse. "What we want to do is basically move the curatorial functions down to the jail, which would include the photograph collection, the scanning, the imaging, collection storage, all of that," said David G. Westmoreland, NHS president. "We want to keep the educational and administrative space up in the office in the Town House (on Mill Hill)." A fire in late spring gutted the interior of the historic jailhouse, which dates back to the early 19th century and now belongs to the city. The blaze forced out two tenants living in second-floor apartments in the structure. Peter A. Bondi, Historical Commission vice chairman, gave an update on where the jailhouse stands following the fire. He said the roof must be removed and the rafters taken out, as a result of damage from the fire.

Robert McGrath was a Stamford firefighter working three days on, three days off.

On Robert's days off he operated a small heating and air-conditioning business to make ends meet.

Then this Stamford fireman got his big break....

Robert got the chance to do heating and air-conditioning duct work on the120-year-old barn that Stamford Mayor Dan Malloy was transforming into a house.

Robert also did many jobs for several of Dan Malloy's brothers.

Dan Malloy chose to use Richard who was on the Stamford City payroll to work on his future home even though there are hundreds of Heating And Air- Conditioning contractors with in a 30 minute drive of his home.

A short time after that Richard was promoted to Assistant Stamford Fire And Rescue Chief and then soon after that was appointed as the Stamford Fire and Rescue Chief.

Stamford Fire and Rescue Chief Robert McGrath later told Stamford Advocate reporter Louis Porter that the work on Dan Malloy's home did not have anything to do with his advancement to Assistant Fire Chief and later Fire Chief.

Another contractors who did work on Dan Malloy's Ocean Drive East house was Rick Sharper.

Rick told The Associated Press he got the job and dealt with Marc Lyons, a friend of Malloy who was involved in hiring city employees and contractors to work on then Mayor Dan Malloy's house.

Rick said after he did work on the mayor’s house Marc Lyons later arranged a lot of work for him at city high schools.

Marc Lyons, who was a Malloy family friend was the construction manager at Stamford High School and after the Mayor's house was completed he became manager of all of the city and school facilities in Stamford..

Several Charges for Stamford Man in South Norwalk Tuesday Morning (thehour)

NORWALK By STEVE KOBAK Hour Staff Writer A 45-year-old Stamford man was arrested early Tuesday morning after breaking into an acquaintance's apartment and apparently smearing barbecue sauce on the wall, police said. Breckenridge Shanklin, of 597 South Pacific St., was charged with disorderly conduct, second-degree burglary, interfering with an officer and refusal to be fingerprinted. He was held on $25,000 bond and given a court date of Aug. 5. Police said they apprehended Shanklin after they were called to a residential burglary near C&S Grocery, 86 Woodward Ave., shortly after midnight. When officers arrived, two men and a woman -- all of whom lived across the street from the C&S Grocery -- were standing near Shanklin, who was laying [sic] on the ground behind the grocery store, police said. Officers later learned that Shanklin had busted in the apartment for no apparent reason while a male and a female who lived in the apartment were walking on Woodward Avenue, according to police.

Marine Unit of NPD Investigates Monday Night's Norwalk Harbor Boating Accident (thehour)

NORWALK By STEVE KOBAK Hour Staff Writer Four people were pulled from the water in Norwalk Harbor near Manresa Island late Monday night after their 17-foot boat struck a navigational buoy and started to sink, according to police. Norwalk firefighters and the Marine Unit of the Norwalk Police Department responded to the boating accident at 11:13 p.m., according to Sgt. Peter Lapak of the Marine Unit. The boat was sinking quickly because it struck a buoy and sustained a four-foot hole in its right side, Maggio said. By the time emergency crews arrived, the 15-year-old captain of the boat and his three passengers had boarded the 15-year-old's father's boat, which was also towing the remains of the damaged boat, Maggio said. Police learned that the 15-year-old captain had called his father before calling police, Lapak said. His father's other boat was docked at Cove Marina, and his father quickly set out to rescue the distressed boaters, according to Maggio. The boaters were not wearing life jackets, and they were in the water for several minutes prior to the rescue, police said.

Four Arrests in Tuesday's Stabbing Incident on Linden Street (thehour)

NORWALK By STEVE KOBAK Hour Staff Writer A domestic altercation involving a mother, her two sons and her boyfriend ended Tuesday evening with one son apparently being stabbed with a broken broomstick and the arrest of all four individuals involved in the incident, according to police. The incident took place in the family's home at 24 Linden St. and it involved 40-year-old Lissette Melendez, her boyfriend, 38-year-old Joseph Diaz, and Melendez's two sons -- Isabelo Delgado, 20, and a 15-year-old, whose name is not being released because of his youthful offender status, police said. Police information on the altercation was incomplete. Only a two-page, supplementary report on the incident was available Wednesday morning. Officers were called to the home at 6:24 p.m. Tuesday and when they arrived, they took a man whose back was injured and bleeding profusely to Norwalk Hospital.

How Three Bank Robbery Suspects Got ID'd then Captured (thehour)

NORWALK By STEVE KOBAK Hour Staff Writer A series of mishaps and miscues led to the identification and capture of the three men accused of conspiring to rob the Chestnut Hill Road branch of Fairfield County Savings Bank, according to court files that were unsealed Tuesday. Information from a social worker, an astute bank clerk and the father of one of the suspects led police to identify Matthew DeCredico, Timothy Nikolis and Christopher Williams as suspects who stole $4,200 from the bank, police said. Nikolis, 24, of Westport, and Williams, 23, of Norwalk, both pleaded not guilty to the robbery-related charges at their previous court dates. Decredico, 23, of Westport, pleaded not guilty to the charges on Tuesday. All three men are being held at Bridgeport Correctional Center and they will appear in court on Aug. 27. According to an arrest warrant affidavit, DeCredico, Nikolis and Williams spent the hours prior to the July 6 robbery looking for heroin and trying to pawn a flatscreen television that they had stolen from an office building.

Tuesday Evening's Report of a Stabbing on Linden Street (thehour)

NORWALK Staff Report One male was stabbed in the back Tuesday evening during a domestic altercation in a home at 24 Linden St. The Hour photographer Matthew Vinci had arrived on the scene and saw the victim was bleeding profusely. The victim asked Vinci to take him and a companion to the hospital. En route, Vinci flagged down approaching police, who transported the victim to Norwalk Hospital. Police detained at least one man at the scene. Multiple neighbors said they heard a woman screaming loudly prior to the arrival of emergency crews, and that police had responded to calls at the home multiple times in the past. Liuia Godoi, who lives near 24 Linden St., said she saw three men enter the home prior to the stabbing and heard what sounded like a loud fight. Godoi said she saw one man leave the house and run toward West Rocks Road.

There is great news today. Rick has received another endorsement. It is from the National Republican Liberty Caucus. His picture is already up on their website at http://www.rlc.org/endorsed-candidates-2010/#9.

This endorsement was originally given to Rob Merkle, but for reasons unknown it was revoked and awarded to Rick.

One Property is Passed to aThird Winning Bidder in City's Tax Sale (thehour)

NORWALK By ROBERT KOCH Hour Staff Writer All but one winning bidder in the city's tax sale Aug. 19 paid the balance of his or her bid by the Friday deadline, according to the Tax Collector's office. "The property where the bidder declined to consummate was 4 Lawrence St.," said Tax Collector Lisa Biagiarelli. Biagiarelli said she offered the property to the next highest bidder, who declined because he had been declared the successful bidder on three other properties. Biagiarelli said the third highest bidder has agreed to consummate the sale. That bidder offered $76,000, she said. The property -- the second auctioned in the tax sale -- is a single-family home and land assessed at $280,420 on the city's Grand List of taxable properties, according to the Tax Assessor's Office. Seven people registered to bid on the property and each put down a deposit of $5,000. Bidding started at $21,945. Twenty-nine bids were made with the winning bidder offering $120,000 for the property, according to Biagiarelli.

DUI Charge For City Man Driving a Motor Scooter (thehour)

NORWALK By CHASE WRIGHT Hour Staff Writer Norwalk police say a city man became belligerent, spitting and swearing at officers, after they stopped him early Sunday morning for allegedly driving his scooter while intoxicated. According to police, officers pulled over Arthur Jacob, 46, of 542 Westport Ave., at about 12:30 a.m. on Sunday after he ran a stop sign at the intersection of Fort Point Street and Osborne Avenue. Jacob sped up when he noticed the officer tailing him and, according to police, went through another stop sign at the intersection of East Avenue, police said. According to the arrest affidavit, Jacob admitted to drinking three or four beers earlier that evening. He failed multiple field sobriety tests would not submit to a breathalyzer, police said. He was charged with operating a motor vehicle with under the influence and was held on $75,000 bond.

Why In The World Would Dan Malloy

Want To Play The Race Card?

In this day and age it is almost inevitable that a campaign will stray from policy issues to questions of character and conduct.

Greenwich resident Ned Lamont recently became a target of such scrutiny and said the negative attack was planted by a desperate and trailing Dan Malloy.

Mr. Malloy who is trying to benefit from playing the race card, argues that this is a means of assessing an opponent's temperament and morality.

Whether Mr. Malloy's attempt at playing the race card will be decisive in assessing the ability of Ned Lamont to govern is ultimately up to each individual voter.

In the current race to become Connecticut governor front runner Ned Lamont has taken a hard "nonpolicy" hit.

Mr. Malloy is hoping that his race card maneuver will cause the popular Ned Lamont's to have an increase in "negative numbers".

The race card is a proven campaign method of narrowing a race.

In articles and press releases printed below, you will read about Ronald Keene, a former executive vice president of Lamont Digital Systems Inc., who sued Mr. Lamont in 2002.

Mr. Keene alleged his firing and failure to gain stock, bonuses and commissions from sales were the result of racial discrimination. Lamont denied the allegation of bias and the parties settled the case the following year.

Mr. Keene's contention of a racial factor could be accurate, erroneous or the result of a misunderstanding.

Mr. Keene's racial allegation could also have been just a legal tactic to gain the upper hand in an employee termination lawsuit. It would not be the first time that something like this has happened in America.

Businesses often find legal settlements to be the least costly course of action.

There is clearly no pattern of racial lawsuits at Lamont Digital Systems, this was a one time event.

However, Dan Malloy's Administration has been named in over 100 Connecticut Commission on Human Right's And Opportunities's complaints, as well as, scores of Federal lawsuits filed by Stamford employees.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Ned Lamont, locked in an Aug. 10 primary battle with former Stamford Mayor Dan Malloy, was sued in 2002 by a black former executive in his cable television company who claimed that he'd been mistreated on the basis of race, federal court records show.

Ronald Keene — executive vice president in the Delaware corporate office of Lamont Digital Systems Inc. for less than two years ending in mid-2000 — sought at least $1 million in U.S. District Court in Pennsylvania. Keene claimed he was "maliciously" fired after being denied stock, bonuses and commissions from sales activity. The mistreatment was "because of plaintiff's race, which is African American," the suit said.

Lamont, a Greenwich multimillioniare entrepreneur, denied Keene's allegation of bias as well as other claims, such as eligibility for sales commissions. The case was settled in September 2003, months after a judge denied Lamont's motion to dismiss the suit and moved it toward trial, documents show.......

Then Dan Malloy Quickly Fired Off This Press Release:......

Responding to a story in today's Hartford Courant in which it was revealed that Ned Lamont was sued for racial discrimination, and that he settled the suit privately with a confidentiality agreement, Dan Malloy, the Democratic Party's endorsed candidate for Governor, released the following statement:
"Since the beginning of this campaign, I've said that my experiences as a prosecutor and Mayor are why I'm confident I can do the job Connecticut's next Governor needs to do. Ned has said time and again that he should be the next Governor because of his business experience. That's why Ned needs to answer the questions raised in today's Hartford Courant story - because they're about his business.

"There's another reason he needs to answer them: the Governor. We just saw Gov. Rell try to fire a commissioner and enter into a confidentiality agreement with the employee. It blew up in her face, and it should've blown up in her face. Government doesn't work when it's secretive. It only works when it functions in the open, in a way that everyone can see.
"Here are the questions he should answer:
· Why is the statement confidential?
· What did he or his company acknowledge doing?
· Were certain employees denied benefits that other employees of similar seniority and status received?
· How much money was the employee paid in order to keep quiet?
· Why does a Connecticut-based company have a corporate headquarters in the State of Delaware?
· Is there a tax benefit to doing so?
· What happened to all of Ned's employees? He's said numerous times that he hired "hundreds and hundreds" of people, yet the company today has only 36 employees, including just 8 in Connecticut.
"I know what Ned will say in response: 'this is an unfair, desperate attack.' That's wrong. He's asked tough questions of me, and I've answered every one of them. Campaigns are tough, and they should be tough - because the job we're seeking is a tough job. You get asked tough questions in a campaign, but you get asked tougher questions when you're Governor. If you can't answer questions in a campaign, how will you answer them as Governor?
"I think Ned should answer these questions, and I'd prefer that he do that in a debate with me. Ch. 3 and CPBN want to have Ned and me debate on August 3 - and if Ned doesn't show up, the debate is going on without him. Most candidates would probably be thrilled. While I'm grateful for their offer, I'm not thrilled to be there alone. I'm more than happy to give up half that time if Ned will show up.
"One more thing: Ned's been saying he doesn't want to debate me because debates are only about '1 minute canned response.' My response to that is, let's not do that. Let's just have a conversation between the two of us. A civil conversation in which we ask each other questions, and challenge each other's responses.
"Back in May I said I wanted this to be a campaign filled with substantive debates where we both answer tough questions. We don't have much time left, but there's still time for that debate to happen.
"I hope Ned will change his mind."

Racist threats case filed by Stamford High student settled for $37,500

The lawsuit, filed in May, accused the city of "failing to act in part because one of the callers is the son of Stamford Mayor Daniel Malloy."

The exact amount the Board Of Education paid the family of Candace Owens, now an 18-year-old Stamford High graduate, was made public yesterday after The Advocate filed a Freedom of Information request last week.

The Board of Education spent an additional $25,000 on legal expenses, including representation by a Hartford law firm, Shipman & Goodwin LLP, school board spokeswoman Sarah Arnold said.

The case was terminated two weeks ago at a settlement conference, according to court records. As part of the settlement, the Board of Education denied any wrongdoing and liability.

The school board has 30 days from the settlement date to pay the Owens family by check to their attorney, Norman Pattis. The entire $62,500 tab will come out of a $375,000 legal fund.

"The case was resolved to the mutual satisfaction of both parties," said Patrick Fahey, one of the attorneys who represented the Board of Education.

He declined to comment further.

Neither Pattis nor Robert Owens, the father of Candace Owens, returned phone messages.

The Board of Education attempted to keep the terms of the settlement from being disclosed because of a confidentiality clause. But the Freedom of Information Commission said that any settlement funded by taxpayers is public record unless it is sealed by the court.

The settlement marked the end of a yearlong controversy that stoked racial tensions and political drama.

Last February, at least one of five teenagers sitting in a car left messages threatening to kill Owens, who is black, and repeatedly used a racial epithet. In one of three messages, one of them referred to her as "dirty" and threatened to burn her house down and tar and feather her.

The group included Malloy's youngest son, Sam Malloy, then 14. The mayor released a statement in March saying his son cooperated with police and did not know the alleged ringleader, Evan Kopek, or Owens before the night of the calls. He has declined comment since then.

Kopek, now 18, was a former friend and classmate of Owens. Two days before the phone incident, they had a shouting match during class. School officials suspended Kopek for that but would not discipline him and the other boys for an incident committed off school grounds unless the police made an arrest, which drew criticism from the state National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Owens left school for six weeks, saying it was traumatic to attend with the alleged callers. She returned after Kopek was arrested in late March. Another teen was arrested later that spring. School officials would not say whether they disciplined Kopek after the arrest.

The lawsuit said the decision to delay suspensions amounted to a failure to protect Owens. The suit accused the city of violating the federal Title IX rule banning discrimination in schools that receive federal funding. The school system has "continued to do nothing to protect Ms. Owens from repeated harassment and intimidation by the young men and their friends," the suit stated.

None of the students involved in the case attends Stamford High any more, Arnold said.

Candace Owens was arrested in an unrelated harassment case in October. In November, Kopek pleaded to being a youthful offender and had his case sealed. He will have no criminal record. He faced charges of first-degree harassment and second-degree intimidation by bigotry or bias.

It is not known whether Malloy's son was charged because he is a juvenile.

NORWALK By TOM EVANS Hour Staff Writer With no end in sight for the oppressive temperatures and humidity this summer, folks at Calf Pasture Beach on Sunday had a pretty simple formula for beating the heat. "Drink plenty of fluids, get in the shade, and use sunscreen," said Jason Freitag, a supervisor of lifeguards at both Calf Pasture and Shady beaches. "People shouldn't be drinking alcohol in this heat, and a good night's sleep helps." Freitag, in his 12th summer working at the beach, said he heard that New York City has topped 90 degrees a remarkable 20 times this month in just 25 days. The city has maintained a full six lifeguard chairs open during posted beach hours in the first half of this busy summer season. "The beach has been a lot busier this year than it has in the past," Freitag said. "The (12 guards) drink plenty of water, use sunscreen, and we rotate them out of the (guard) chairs every 45 minutes. They're still on duty, but they get a break from watching the water. And we do extra training in the water, or early in the morning."

NORWALK By STEVE KOBAK Hour Staff Writer Calf Pasture Beach holds a bittersweet significance for anti-drug crusader Ginger Katz and the Ian James Eccarino 9-Mile Memorial Road Race and 5k Health Walk -- an event dedicated to her son -- seems to bring out the best ones. While waiting for the first runner to cross the finish line Saturday morning in the beach's parking lot, Katz reminisced about the time she spent running at the beach and visiting her son, who worked at Calf Pasture. "Sometimes I'd just sit on the bench and hope he'd come by," she said. "There's a lot of memories for me at this beach." Ian died on Sept. 10, 1996, of a drug overdose. Since then, Katz has dedicated her life to keeping other children from suffering the same fate through her Courage to Speak Foundation. The race, which is held by the Lightfoot Running Club, has been dedicated to Ian for the past 12 years.

Incarcerated City Man Charged with Participating in Delivery-Man Robberies (thehour)

NORWALK By STEVE KOBAK Hour Staff Writer A 21-year-old city man was charged Friday with participating in two of the string of delivery-man robberies that took place in Norwalk in late 2009. Daniel Smith, who is currently incarcerated at the Bridgeport Correctional Center, was answering to charges stemming from a March 2009 armed robbery when police served a warrant for his arrest in court. Police arrested Smith on June 9 on a warrant for the March 2009 robbery and investigators had said Smith was likely involved in other area robberies. The latest allegations against Smith stem from two separate pizza delivery-man robberies that took place in December 2009. Smith is alleged to have taken part in the Dec. 2 robbery of an East Avenue Pizza employee. The victim in that case was lured to a fake address on Ohio Avenue and robbed by two men, one of whom held a machete to the victim's throat, police said. The thieves took some cash, two pizzas and a GPS from the victim, police said.

Three Boys Rescued From Long Island Sound (thehour)

NORWALK By STEVE KOBAK Hour Staff Writer The Marine Unit of the Norwalk Police Department helped rescue three boys who had drifted into Long Island Sound and capsized their boats late Thursday morning. The boys were taking sailing lessons at the Tokeneke Club -- a private beach club in Darien -- and heavy winds blew their dinghies into the sound, police said. The Marine Unit received a radio transmission about the sailing mishap at 10:48 a.m. and three officers set out to rescue the boys, according to police. The officers came upon an 8-year-old boy whose vessel had capsized near a buoy and they pulled him aboard the police boat, police said. The boy was crying and nervous but uninjured, according to police. Meanwhile, a lobsterman had located two of the young sailors between Green's Ledge and Sheffield Island and pulled them onto his lobster boat, police said.

Dan Debicella points out actions speak louder than words

Below is a statement from Dan Debicella regarding recent backpeddling by Jim Himes and his startling record promoting out-of-control spending.

“As an incumbent beholden to Washington insiders, Jim Himes has been feeding government from the all-you-can-eat buffet. Now, with an election approaching, he is showing a sudden interest in the dollar menu.

This is yet another example of Jim Himes’s hypocrisy. You can’t vote for a 22% increase in discretionary spending and then talk about cuts three months before the election. It’s too little too late and it doesn’t fool voters in Fairfield County.

The first place this commission should look to cut spending is by repealing programs that Jim Himes has already voted for that have launched spending to never-before-seen levels.

One more do-nothing political committee is not the answer and I believe there is a better way. I propose a hard spending cap that will force politicians of both parties to make tough decisions about how tax dollars are spent and an end to political earmarks that simply reward politicians for voting with party insiders. We need to get serious about cutting spending.”

· Voted YES on one of the largest one-year increase in federal spending since the Carter administration.

· Voted YES on the ‘most fiscally irresponsible budget in American history.

· Voted YES – twice – on the trillion-dollar government takeover of healthcare.

Dan Debicella is the Republican Party’s nominee to face Jim Himes this November.

Debicella is a second-term Republican State Senator representing the eastern part of Fairfield County, including Shelton, Stratford, Monroe, and Seymour. He grew up in Bridgeport where his father was a police officer and his mother was a secretary. He was the first in his family to go to college full time, attending the Wharton School and receiving his MBA from Harvard Business School. He has spent most of his career in business, having worked for management consulting firm McKinsey in Stamford, as Director of Strategy at PepsiCo in Purchase, NY, and currently as Assistant Vice President of Marketing at The Hartford Financial Services.

In the State Senate, Debicella has served as the lead Republican on the budget-writing Appropriations Committee. He recently co-authored a budget proposal that cut the size of Connecticut government by 5% through combining or eliminating agencies, privatizing social services, and resetting program spending to 2007 levels. Debicella also led the fight against the budget that ultimately passed, which raised taxes by $1 billion and borrowed $1 billion to balance the budget.

The Fourth Congressional District comprises most of Fairfield County, including seventeen towns from Greenwich in the west, to Shelton in the east, and Ridgefield in the north. The seat was held by Congressman Christopher Shays from 1987-2009.

The officer escorted the girl home, then began searching the area for the truck, she said. Rob Merkle hopes win an August !0^th primary so that he can run against Democratic Congressman and Greenwich resident Jim Himes in November. Shelton’s Dan Debicella and Bridgeport’s Rick Torres are in a three way Republican primary with Merkle of Norwalk.

According to the Norwalk Registrar of Voters, Merkle registered October 25, 2008, just before the presidential election. Records also indicated that Merkle voted in municipal elections in 2009.

In addition, Merkle lived in Florida between 1998 and 2002. According to the Secretary of State's office in Tallahassee, Florida, he registered to vote on February 25, 2001. However, there is no record of Merkle having voted.

Merkle’s lack of involvement is a red flag.

Rob Merkle, who claims to have some Tea Party support moved to New Canaan in 1992. In 1998, he moved to Florida, After being arrested for drug possession at age 32 Merkle returned to Connecticut in 2002 He then moved to Georgia for a year and came back to Connecticut in 2004.

A check of voting records in Georgia shows no indication that Merkle even bothered to register to vote.

Many say that Merkle, cares little about the issues and is just being opportunistic, because he feels that incumbents might be vulnerable in November if the Connecticut economy fails to improve.

Most long time Connecticut Yankee Republicans, who have voted all of their lives, think that Merkle is a spoiler and are repulsed by his misguided political ambitions.

Hans Bader, Counsel for Special Projects at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, wrote the report, which names Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal as the worst.

"The nation's worst state attorney general is Richard Blumenthal, a tireless crusader for growing the power of his own office and spreading largesse to his cronies," Bader wrote.

Bader reported on Blumenthal's role in litigation against tobacco companies..

The report said Blumenthal steered $65 million in fees to his own allies and the associates of former Gov. John Rowland, later convicted of corruption in an unrelated matter.

It adds that Blumenthal went "through the motions" of soliciting letters from firms interested in representing the state in the lawsuit. Of the four he selected, one was his former firm, another's partner was married to a partner in the first firm and a managing partner in the third served as counsel to Rowland.

Blumenthal is also bashed for a lawsuit he filed on behalf of several other states against out-of-state utilities for allegedly contributing to global warming.

"Blumenthal himself admitted that his goal was to 'shake up and reshape the way an industry does business' across the nation," Bader wrote. "Since when is that the role of a state official?"

Hearst Newspapers wont tell you that Richard Blumenthal became the prototype for hyperactive attorneys general across the country. Not content to serve as in-house counsel for state government, he has used the office to advance by litigation what the left could not achieve through legislation.

Richard "Mr. Lawsuit" Blumenthal's has chased jobs from

Connecticut and caused new business from coming to the state.

Mr. Blumenthal a taste for massive multistate, class-action lawsuits. His jurisdiction in the name of consumer protection has since known no bounds. During the browser wars of the late 1990s, Mr. Blumenthal sued Microsoft over the marketing of Windows 98. He filed a supportive brief in a suit against Smith & Wesson that would have held gun manufacturers responsible for crimes committed by third parties using the manufacturer's products.

When the collegiate Atlantic Coast Conference poached some schools from the rival Big East Conference, of which the University of Connecticut is a member, Mr. Blumenthal sued. When subprime mortgage shop Countrywide Financial was in trouble, the attorney general piled on with his own lawsuit. When AIG's bonuses became controversial, Mr. Blumenthal issued a wave of subpoenas. Most of these efforts went nowhere, but they did get Mr. Blumenthal in the news.

The attorney general has also used the power of the state to bully small businesses. In 2003, he sued Computers Plus Center for $1.75 million in damages for allegedly selling state government machines without specified parts. Mr. Blumenthal issued a press release accusing the business owner, Gina Malapanis, of fraud: "No supplier should be permitted to shortchange or overcharge the State without severe consequences," he said. "We will vigorously pursue this case to recover taxpayer money and send a strong message about zero tolerance for contractor misconduct." Ms. Malapanis was even arrested in her home on seven first-degree larceny charges.

In 2008 the charges against Ms. Malapanis were dismissed. As for the civil case, she refused to plead guilty and countersued the state for abusing its power and violating her constitutional rights. The jury, recoiling at the overly aggressive action that ruined her business, awarded her a whopping $18 million in January. In a handwritten note on court documents, the jury foreman said the state had engaged in a "pattern of conduct" that harmed Ms. Malapanis's reputation, and cited the state's press releases impugning her integrity, some of which came from Mr. Blumenthal.

An eminent domain case involving a working quarry taken in 2004 to expand a highway in the town of Brookfield ended up in court. The quarry owners, who were originally paid about $4 million for the property, felt cheated by the state. They sued, and Mr. Blumenthal defended the state's action, bringing in new appraisers who also low-balled the property's value. Judge Barbara Sheedy concluded the state had been "unprofessional" and "less than scrupulous" in its handling of the case, having hand-picked unqualified appraisers for the purpose of deliberately underestimating the quarry's value. The owners were awarded another $28 million, including interest payments.

This spring, the exasperated CFO of Hartford-based United Technologies Corp. blurted out that doing business "anyplace outside of Connecticut is low-cost." The company was frustrated in part by a union lawsuit—supported by Mr. Blumenthal—challenging the company's plan to close a local factory as part of the firm's response to the recession. UTC—with $53 billion in revenue last year and 26,000 employees in Connecticut—is the state's largest private employer. It's exactly the sort of company other states would love to host.

Some Connecticut's business community have quietly greeted Mr. Blumenthal's candidacy for the US Senate with relief: Anything to get him out of state.

Here's what Change the Congress in 2010 wants for Connecticut 4th District voters: An honest representative. A trustworthy person. A person with real experience in life. The more Rick looked around, the more inescapable was the conclusion: it was exactly the 'compassion' of the big government—professed by the Democratic Party—that was incentivizing poverty. On the other hand, the only logical solution to end poverty was to help people get off the government dole. Now he wants to represent the 4th District of Connecticut and work to get all of the people out of the welfare trap, off of public assistance, and into homes they work to own.

It's a tall order but Torres doesn't mind hard work. Today a successful self-made businessman, Rick never forgets his humble beginnings. He spent his post-Cuba childhood across the street from P.T. Barnum Public Housing Project while living in section eight public housing. Rick attended Bullard Havens Technical high school where he became a master carpenter and Rick will proudly show off the house he built with his own hands.

Rick Torres is a Change the Congress in 2010 Endorsed Candidate because he didn't give up. Now it's the turn of Connecticut 4th District not to give up ... Rick Torres epitomizes the American Dream ... he got out of the welfare trap and became a productive and successful citizen.
