He was born in Sanford, N.C., on Jan. 1, 1937, to William and Laura (Petty) Matthews. He had been a mechanic for many years. He is survived by his son, Michael; daughter Karen Matthews; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; seven brothers; and two sisters.
